Nightmare Reality

When you lie in bed at night, and your mind seems to run wild over uncharted fields of imagination, there inevitably arise those patches that shock, horrify, and terrify. Nightmares we call them, and mature individuals are told to shrug them off, they don't mean anything anyway.
But what if that advice is wrong?

What if that bit of nightmare ground that you stumbled across in your imagination isn't simple fancy, what if it is only while asleep that you can understand what is truly happening around you?
What if the nightmare is real? What if your mind simply cannot grasp it, and so it represses all knowledge of it. Until you fall asleep. Then--when the conscious mind can no longer force it away--the nightmare returns. It presses against you until you feel as though you should scream, but you cannot.

You cannot wake up, because the nightmare is real, and your mind is useless in this fight. Only the subconscious, that indomitable, animal will to survive is of any use here; sublimate the conscious and all that is left is this, that you will live whatever it takes.

But, the nightmare laughs at you, for no-one has a truly indomitable will, and the Nightmare's power is limitless. It can wait. Eventually you will succumb, your will will fold, and your mind will be awakened. And then, then the true horror begins; because while you are awake, then the Nightmare wreaks its way on you and you cannot react or even recognize it. Your subconscious will try to warn you. The hairs standing on the back of your neck, a sudden chill, a feeling of someone watching you; the Nightmare is there, and it hungers.

Sleep tonight, and sleep deep, and pray that your will is strong, or you will again awaken... and the Nightmare may finally be tired of toying with you... and decide it is ready to feed...
